Are You Wearing the Right Sneakers/Shoes? Kick Your Kicks Up a Notch!

Are your sneakers looking fresh but leaving your feet feeling... not so fresh? It's time to make sure your kicks aren't just stylish, but actually doing their job to keep you comfy and pain-free! We’re not just talking about matching your outfit—we mean finding the sneakers that support your feet like the champs they are.

Here’s the deal: a lot of those annoying aches and pains you feel? Yep, they might be coming from your feet. If your shoes aren’t giving your body a solid, stable base, that ground reaction force (fancy term for what happens every time your foot hits the ground) is going to travel up and mess with your joints and spine. Ouch, right?

But don’t worry—we’ve got your back (and feet)! Let’s break down what kind of shoes work best for your foot type, gait, and activities so you can step into the perfect pair. Ready? Let’s go!

Foot Types

  1. Normal (Medium) Arch: Got a normal arch? Lucky you! Your feet are pretty good at absorbing shock on their own, so neutral shoes with a bit of cushioning will be your best friends.

  2. Flat Feet (Low Arch): Flat-footed folks tend to roll inward a little too much when they walk or run. No worries—motion-control shoes are here to save the day and keep you steady.

  3. High Arch: If you’ve got high arches, you’re probably not getting enough shock absorption, which could leave your feet feeling sore. Go for cushioned shoes to give your arches some love.

Gait Types

  1. Overpronation: If your feet are rolling inward like they’re on a mission, you’ll want shoes that help control that motion and keep things balanced.

  2. Underpronation: Feet not rolling inward enough? That means extra pressure on the outside of your foot, so look for shoes with plenty of cushion to soften the blow.

  3. Neutral: If you’ve got a neutral gait, congrats! Neutral shoes with good cushioning will keep you cruising along comfortably.

Shoe Types

  1. Neutral Shoes: Perfect for those with normal arches and a neutral gait—these shoes offer the right amount of cushion and flexibility.

  2. Stability Shoes: If you overpronate or have low arches, stability shoes will give you the extra support you need without weighing you down.

  3. Motion Control Shoes: Got flat feet or serious overpronation? These babies are the most supportive shoes out there, giving you max stability.

Time to Step Up Your Shoe Game!

Next time you're shopping for sneakers, remember it’s about more than just looking good—it’s about feeling good, too. If your shoes aren’t doing their job, your body will feel the impact (literally!). Not sure where to start? We’ve got your back. Ask your physical therapist at Manchester Physical Therapy for personalized advice.

Feel free to share this post with your friends, and let’s all keep those feet happy!
